In case you haven't heard, our classroom city just had its official grand opening this week! Avalanche Adair is a city in our classroom where students are participating in local government, business, and typical city life. Students each have a business in which they sell items to others in the class. They earn money each week and pay bills. They also participate in city council meetings where laws are made and decisions for the city are debated. Students learn the role of economy through banking, buying, selling, and supply and demand. During the month of June, students will open the city to tourists where other classes will come in to purchase items from their stores. The city is a bustling thriving place, rich with learning and fun. It would be very helpful if you would come and participate in this city experience! Let me know if you want to come in and I will let you know the times our city is open. Also, the culmination of the unit is a Kirkland City Tour field trip. This will take place on Monday, June 14th. I would love to have as many parents as possible come. We will be riding the city bus to downtown Kirkland, where we will walk to City Hall and meet the mayor. Then we will have a guided tour through the police department. Afterwards we will walk to the Kirkland Public Library, where students will have a story time and be allowed to sign up for the summer reading program. Then we will have lunch at Peter Kirk Park. In the afternoon we will walk to the Kirkland Performing Arts Center for a backstage tour. Finally, we will ride the bus back to A.G. Bell. It will be a great adventure and we hope you can make it!
